Counselling Modalities & Therapeutic Approaches
Our registered clinical counsellors and psychologists use a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities tailored to each client's needs. Sessions are available in-person at our Abbotsford and Chilliwack clinics. Many extended health benefit plans cover registered counselling services.
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, integrative psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process traumatic memories and reduce their lasting emotional impact. Using bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements, EMDR enables the brain to reprocess distressing experiences in a safe, structured way, often achieving significant relief in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy.
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach designed to help individuals understand the interplay between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. This therapy is based on the premise that negative thought patterns contribute to emotional distress and maladaptive behaviours. By identifying and restructuring these negative thoughts, CBT empowers individuals to develop healthier coping mechanisms and improve their overall mental well-being.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern, evidence-based psychotherapy that uses mindfulness and acceptance strategies to help individuals develop psychological flexibility. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches you to change your relationship with them while committing to actions aligned with your personal values.
-
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic Therapy is a depth-oriented therapeutic approach that explores how unconscious thoughts, early life experiences, and relationship patterns shape your present-day emotions and behaviours. Through the therapeutic relationship, you gain deeper self-understanding and create meaningful, lasting change from the inside out.
-
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is a powerful, evidence-based psychotherapy approach that has transformed the landscape of mental health treatment. Originally developed to address the needs of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), DBT has since expanded to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders.
Finding the Right Approach
Different therapeutic approaches work better for different concerns. CBT is highly effective for anxiety and depression. EMDR is evidence-based for trauma and PTSD. DBT helps with emotional regulation and borderline personality. ACT uses mindfulness to build psychological flexibility. Your counsellor will work with you to identify the approach that fits your goals and history.
Many of our counsellors are trained in multiple modalities and will integrate approaches based on what is working best for you. You don't need to know which approach you need before booking — simply describe your concerns and your counsellor will guide you.
