Complete Decongestive Therapy
Clinical Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy for lymphedema, chronic edema and medically appropriate post-surgical swelling. Provided and billed under a Registered Massage Therapist licence.
About Complete Decongestive Therapy
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a structured approach to managing lymphedema and chronic edema. It combines Manual Lymphatic Drainage with compression, skin care, therapeutic movement and self-management education, delivered as a coordinated plan rather than a single technique. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, precise manual technique that supports the movement of fluid through functioning lymphatic pathways. It uses light, rhythmic, direction-specific movements rather than the deeper pressure associated with conventional massage. Treatment should be comfortable, and is adapted to each person's medical history, presentation and goals. MLD may be used on its own, but for people with lymphedema it is usually one component of a broader plan. CDT generally involves an active reduction phase followed by a maintenance phase intended to preserve the results achieved. International lymphology guidance describes compression, skin care, exercise and MLD as complementary parts of this approach, rather than MLD as a stand-alone cure. This service is provided and receipted under a Registered Massage Therapist licence. It is distinct from the osteopathic lymphatic treatment also offered at The Healing Oak, which is delivered under a different scope of practice and billed under a different insurance category. Treatment recommendations are individualized, and no specific number of appointments or outcome can be guaranteed.

When to Consider Complete Decongestive Therapy
- Consider this service if you are managing diagnosed primary or secondary lymphedema, including lymphedema associated with cancer treatment, lymph-node removal, radiation, surgery or trauma; if you have persistent swelling that has already been medically evaluated; if you are recovering from an orthopedic, reconstructive, cancer-related or cosmetic procedure and treatment is medically appropriate; or if you need practical support with compression bandaging, garments, skin care, movement or self-MLD between appointments.
- Lymphedema is generally a chronic condition that requires ongoing management rather than a one-time treatment.
What to Expect
A first appointment begins with a detailed health history and an assessment within the RMT scope of practice. Depending on your presentation, the appointment may include a review of your diagnosis, surgery or relevant medical history; observation and palpation of the affected tissues; baseline circumference measurements; Manual Lymphatic Drainage; compression bandaging where appropriate; movement and breathing exercises; skin-care and infection-risk education; self-MLD instruction; compression garment education; and a personalized treatment and maintenance plan. Not every client needs every component of CDT. Treatment is selected according to your needs, tolerance, medical status and goals. MLD is performed with very light pressure and should not be painful. It is not a lighter version of a relaxation or deep-tissue massage: it follows lymphatic anatomy, focuses on fluid movement, and requires specific screening and treatment planning. Appropriate massage-therapy assessment, movement or soft-tissue techniques may be incorporated, but these appointments stay focused on lymphatic and edema-management needs. Compression bandages, padding, garments and other supplies are billed separately from the appointment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need a referral?
- A referral is not generally required to book a Registered Massage Therapy appointment. Your insurance provider may require one for reimbursement, and medical clearance may be requested depending on your diagnosis, surgery or symptoms.
- How many appointments will I need?
- Frequency and duration depend on the cause and severity of the swelling, your response to care, your compression needs and your ability to follow a home-management plan. Recommendations are made after assessment and reviewed regularly. No specific number of appointments or outcome can be guaranteed.
- Is MLD painful?
- MLD is performed with very light pressure and should not be painful. Compression and tissue techniques are adjusted according to your comfort and clinical needs.
- Can MLD cure lymphedema?
- There is currently no established cure for most lymphedema. Treatment focuses on reducing or controlling swelling, protecting the skin, maintaining function, and helping you manage the condition over time.
- Can I book immediately after surgery?
- Timing depends on the procedure, your healing status and your surgeon's instructions. Clearance may be required before treatment begins.
- Are compression garments included?
- No. Compression bandages, padding and garments are billed separately from the appointment fee. Education and support on appropriate compression options are provided, but additional assessment, prescription or fitting may be required depending on the garment and your insurer.
- How is this different from the clinic's osteopathic lymphatic treatment?
- These are two separate services with different scopes of practice, treatment structures and insurance billing categories. Complete Decongestive Therapy is a focused lymphatic and edema-management service provided and receipted under a Registered Massage Therapist licence. The clinic's osteopathic lymphatic treatment incorporates lymphatic techniques into broader manual osteopathic care and is billed under osteopathy or manual therapy benefits where eligible.
- Are mobile appointments available?
- Mobile appointments may be available where mobility, recent surgery or medical circumstances make attending the clinic difficult. Mobile service is subject to clinical suitability, scheduling and travel availability, and an additional travel fee may apply.
